This year I have spent time in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and in Dubai, UAE.
The main purpose of the trips was to meet Partners and In-House Counsel, throughout the region, and see whether there is a path, or if we can create a path, for Africa-based Attorneys to gain experience of working and living in the Gulf region.

The Middle East presents a range of opportunities for Africa-based lawyers, driven by the region's dynamic, fast growing legal landscape and economic growth.
Here are some key points highlighting these opportunities:
Growing Legal Market.
The Middle East is experiencing significant development in sectors such as infrastructure, energy and finance, leading to an increasing demand for legal services.
This growth creates openings for lawyers with expertise in these areas, especially those familiar with cross-border transactions and international law.

International Law Firms
Major international law firms, such as Clifford Chance, Hogan Lovells, and White & Case, have established a strong presence in the Middle East.
These firms often seek lawyers with diverse backgrounds, including those from Africa, to enhance their teams. Their practices cover various sectors, including corporate law, dispute resolution, and project finance.
Cultural and Legal Expertise.
Lawyers from Africa can leverage their understanding of both African and Middle Eastern legal frameworks to provide valuable insights into regional business practices. This dual expertise is particularly beneficial in sectors like energy and infrastructure, where projects often span multiple jurisdictions.
Networking and Collaboration.
Many firms emphasise collaboration with local law firms, allowing Africa-based lawyers to build networks that enhance their career prospects.
For instance, firms like DLA, have deep ties within the African legal market, which can be advantageous for lawyers looking to transition into Middle Eastern roles.
Oh….and the pay is tax free, and very good!!

Career Development Opportunities.
The region offers robust career development programs aimed at nurturing talent.
Law firms are increasingly focused on inclusivity and professional growth, providing training and mentorship to help lawyers advance their careers.
Diverse Practice Areas
Opportunities exist across various practice areas, including:
- Corporate M&A
- Dispute Resolution
- Project Development
- Islamic Finance
- Regulatory Compliance
These areas are critical as businesses navigate the complexities of operating in the Middle East.
In summary, Africa-based lawyers can find numerous opportunities in the Middle East due to the region's economic expansion, the presence of international law firms, and the increasing need for legal expertise across various sectors.
Networking, cultural adaptability, and a focus on continuous learning will be key factors in successfully capitalising on these opportunities.
