Explaining how to read the numbers (4min video)
For the South African legal market, it’s that time of year again.
Our most popular research report of the year has been released, and you are receiving it first.
Look out for a review on law.com
The GRM Intelligence team have once again outdone themselves with a world-class reporting of remuneration structures across the whole country, and across all industries.
Notes:
How to read the percentiles.
You know your total annual remuneration.
Look at it in comparison to the sector you are in and to some but not all of your industry colleagues.
This is an accurate portrait of where you sit in the market in comparison to some of the lower and higher earners.
It is important to note, these colleagues could be based anywhere in SA; from Sandton, to Mpumalanga, from Cape Town to De Aar; in an Investment Bank or a diesel distributer; from an International law firm to a one-person high street law firm; from an international litigation specialist, to a family lawyer - the spread is wide, but accurate.
In-House Legal Market.
Over the course of this year and into ‘25/26 we have seen, and will continue to see, an increase in the responsibility, focus and importance of In-House Counsel across the continent, largely at the big listed entities, financial services and international companies, leading to increased remuneration (but not yet number of roles).
Remuneration can include the value of stock options, salary, profit share, dividends, bonuses, golden handshakes, etc.
Practice.
Firms from one-person to hundreds have been assessed and analysed.
Remuneration is driving by practice area, city, client base, international work or local work, and many, many other factors.
There are many different pay structures at play in the legal sphere, as laid out in the report.
ALSP.
A growing market, as we see more operations open up, offering non-traditional styles of legal services and involving tech solutions and with an eye on speed of delivery and flexibility.
