In September/October we will be releasing our highly anticipated South African Legal Remuneration Survey for 2025/26. For over 10 years we have been bringing the legal market in SA the most thoroughly researched remuneration breakdown available.

Used by Partners, GC’s, ALSPs and HR teams to assist with their talent attraction and retention strategies, our research team takes 9-10 months to conduct the field research and analysis in order to be as accurate as we can be.

We interview legal professionals from across the country, in every major city and town, in companies and firms of all shapes and sizes.

Chief Legal Officers/General Counsels are interviewed and researched by the GRM Intelligence team, all over South Africa.

From one-person Legal Teams to the largest corporates in the country - we take in data from as many in-house legal teams as possible, from every major city and town across the country.

Please refer to the post on methodology if you are unclear on how we lay these figures out.

5 top takeaways from the 2024/25 report and Next Year’s Predictions

Remember that this does not include the top 10% and bottom 10% of earners from across law firms of all shapes and sizes, in multiple cities. By including outliers, we often skew the numbers.

  1. Steady increases in key markets including banking, finance, insurance.

  2. Average base pays were 2.6m to 3.3m, but a lot more focus on bonuses and bens.
